Ice baths at home: tubs, ice, siting and what it actually costs in the UK
An ice bath at home is any container of water you cool by hand with ice before getting in. There is no minimum spend and no technology involved: a £120 livestock trough on a paving slab, a hosepipe and a few bags of ice is a fully functional ice bath. What separates a good home setup from an abandoned one is not the tub — it is where you put it, how you get the water out, and how much the ice costs you in July.
For most people the honest answer is to start cheap. Buy a tub, use UK mains water for the winter when it needs almost no ice at all, and find out whether the habit survives a British February before spending thousands. What counts as an ice bath
An ice bath is defined by how it gets cold, not by what it looks like. If you are adding ice, it is an ice bath. If a chiller holds the temperature for you, it is a cold plunge. That distinction drives everything else: cost, effort, water hygiene and whether the thing is usable in summer.
Three practical consequences follow from adding ice by hand:
- The water drifts warmer while you sit in it. A person shedding body heat into 300 litres will lift the temperature by 1–2°C over a few minutes.
- There is no filtration, so the water has a short usable life.
- The setup is portable. Nothing is plumbed, nothing is wired, and nothing needs an electrician.
How much ice you actually need
The physics is simple enough to do on the back of an envelope. Melting ice absorbs a large, fixed amount of energy, so:
Roughly 1 kg of ice will cool 100 litres of water by 1°C.
Add about 20% on top for heat leaking in through an uninsulated tub, and for the fact you are sitting in it. For a 300-litre fill — a typical trough or inflatable, filled to a level where a seated adult is submerged to the shoulders — that works out as follows.

Two things fall out of that table. First, an ice bath in a UK winter costs nothing to run — the cold tap is already delivering plunge temperature. Second, summer is where the money goes, and it is the reason most people who plunge daily eventually buy a chiller. We work that crossover through properly on the chiller vs ice page.
Where to buy ice
- Supermarket bags — usually 2 kg, roughly £2–£3 a bag. Convenient, and the most expensive way to buy water. A 27 kg summer session is 13–14 bags.
- Ice suppliers and cash-and-carry — 10 kg or 20 kg bags, typically £0.25–£0.50 per kg delivered or collected. This is the difference between an ice bath costing £30 a session and £8 a session.
- Your own freezer — free but slow. Two-litre plastic tubs frozen solid are more useful than cubes because they melt slowly and are easy to lift out. A standard domestic freezer will produce perhaps 4–6 kg a day, which does not keep up with daily summer use.
Frozen 5-litre water bottles are worth knowing about: they chill the water without diluting it and can be refrozen indefinitely, which suits a tub you want to keep filled.

On the bath. It is free, it drains, and it is warm indoors when you get out — which are real advantages. The problem is volume. At 150–180 litres you are working with half the thermal mass, so it takes proportionally less ice but warms up roughly twice as fast, and a standard bath has no insulation at all. It is a good way to try cold water, not a good long-term setup.
On chest freezers. People convert them, and we would not. It is an appliance never designed to hold standing water or take a person’s weight, with a mains-powered compressor and wiring sitting directly beneath the water. If a sealed, insulated cold tub is what you want, a purpose-built plunge with a proper chiller and an isolated water circuit does the same job with the electricity kept out of the water.
Siting it
Load first. Water weighs 1 kg per litre, so a 300-litre fill plus the tub plus an 80 kg adult is comfortably over 400 kg sitting on roughly a square metre. That rules out:
- Lawn and bare soil — it will sink, tilt and kill the grass.
- A timber deck built for garden furniture. Domestic decking is typically designed for around 150 kg per square metre; an ice bath is three times that. It can be built to take the load, but it has to be designed for it.
- Anything upstairs other than the existing bath, which sits over structure designed for it.
Paving slabs on a compacted base, a concrete pad, or a garage or utility room floor are all fine. Beyond load, the things that decide whether you keep using it are mundane:
- Distance to a tap. Filling 300 litres by bucket is a chore you will do twice.
- Somewhere for the water to go — a gully, a drain, or lawn you do not mind flooding.
- Distance to the door. Three metres of wet gravel in January ends more cold water habits than the cold does.
- Shade. Direct afternoon sun in July can add several degrees before you have got in.
- Privacy, and somewhere dry to leave a towel and a dressing gown.
Indoors is a genuine option for a small tub — garages and utility rooms suit it — but you need a floor that tolerates splashing and a drain, and you will be dealing with condensation.
Filling, emptying and keeping it clean
Filling is a hosepipe from an outside tap: 300 litres takes 10–20 minutes on a domestic supply. Emptying is where people improvise badly. Two options work:
- A drain valve and a hose. If the tub has a bulkhead fitting, gravity does it in 15–30 minutes provided the outlet is above the discharge point.
- A submersible pump. £30–£60, empties 300 litres in about five minutes, and works when the tub is sitting on the ground with nowhere lower to drain to. This is the single best accessory for a home ice bath.
Without filtration or sanitiser, plan to change the water every one to three uses, or weekly for a tub used by one person who showers first. Cold suppresses bacterial growth but does not eliminate it, and the visible film that forms is body oil and skin. Keep a lid or cover on it — it keeps leaves, insects, rain and sunlight out, and rainwater both dilutes and warms the tub.

When to upgrade to a chilled plunge
There is no rule, but these are the four honest triggers:
- You are plunging three or more times a week through summer and the ice bill has become a standing expense.
- You have started skipping sessions because of the setup time rather than the cold.
- Water quality is bothering you, or more than one person is using the tub.
- You want a fixed feature rather than a trough that lives behind the shed.

Before you start
Cold water immersion carries real risks, and they are front-loaded: the first 30–60 seconds produce an involuntary gasp and a sharp rise in heart rate and blood pressure. Never get in alone, never enter head-first, and stop immediately if your breathing will not settle. Cold immersion is not appropriate for everyone — heart conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, arrhythmia, pregnancy, epilepsy and Raynaud’s are all reasons to speak to your GP first.

Common questions
How much ice do you need for an ice bath?
As a rule of thumb, 1 kg of ice cools about 100 litres of water by 1°C. A 300-litre tub filled from a summer UK mains supply at 19°C needs roughly 27 kg of ice to reach 10°C. The same tub filled in January, when mains water arrives at 6–8°C, needs none at all. Ice demand is seasonal, not fixed.
What can you use as an ice bath at home?
The common UK options are a galvanised or polyethylene livestock trough (£80–£250), an insulated inflatable tub (£80–£300), a wooden or composite barrel (£400–£1,500), a purpose-built insulated ice bath (£600–£2,000), or your own bathroom bath. Troughs and inflatables are the usual starting point because they are cheap, big enough to sit in, and easy to empty.
Where should you put an ice bath?
On something level and load-bearing, within reach of a hose and a drain, and close to the door. A 300-litre tub with a person in it weighs over 400 kg, so paving, concrete or a garage floor is fine but a lawn or a light timber deck is not. Distance from the back door matters more than people expect in a British winter.
How often do you need to change ice bath water?
Without filtration or sanitiser, every one to three uses. Cold water slows bacterial growth but does not stop it, and body oils, skin cells and hair build up quickly in a small volume. Showering before you get in, keeping the tub covered and emptying it weekly is the realistic minimum for a shared household tub.
Is an ice bath cheaper than a cold plunge?
Much cheaper to buy and often cheaper to run, depending on how you source ice. A tub is £80–£600 against £2,500–£12,000 for a chilled plunge. But supermarket bagged ice at around £1.00–£1.50 per kg makes summer sessions expensive, and the hauling and refilling is 20–40 minutes of work each time.
