What size sauna heater do I need? The kW sizing guide
Sauna heaters are sized in kilowatts against cubic metres, and getting it right matters more than brand: an undersized heater never quite gets there on a January evening, and an oversized one gives you harsh air and scorched stones instead of proper löyly. The maths takes two minutes.
The rule of thumb — then the corrections
Start at 1 kW per m³ of internal volume for a well-insulated cabin. Then correct for the ways real saunas leak heat:
- Glass: for every 1 m² of glass (door, panoramic front), size as if the sauna were ~1.5 m³ bigger. Glass-fronted pods climb a full heater size quickly.
- Uninsulated or thin-walled cabins — barrels above all: treat as one class worse; pick from the top of the maker’s volume band. Why insulation earns its money twice is covered in sauna insulation.
- Log or solid-timber walls: timber soaks up heat before the air warms — same upward correction.
- Outdoor siting in the UK: exposed, windy positions in winter justify rounding up — where you put it is part of the thermal spec.

Always finish against the manufacturer’s stated volume range for the specific model — the stone mass and thermostat are matched to it. The supply question — where sizing meets the electrician
Every real sauna heater needs a dedicated circuit; none of this plugs in. Approximate draws at UK 230V single-phase:

Sizing errors we keep seeing
- Sizing to the room you wish you had — measure internal volume, not the footprint.
- Ignoring the door — a glass door alone is ~1.5 m³ of phantom volume.
- “Bigger is faster” beyond the band — past the maker’s range you get hostile heat, not speed.
- Forgetting the stones — more stone mass means softer heat and better steam; cheap heaters skimp exactly there.

What size sauna heater do I need?
Start with roughly 1 kW per cubic metre of well-insulated sauna volume, then correct upwards for weaknesses: add the equivalent of about 1.5 cubic metres for every square metre of glass, and size up for uninsulated or thin-walled cabins such as barrels. A typical insulated 4-person sauna of 6–8 cubic metres lands on a 6–8 kW heater; compact 2-person cabins usually want 3.5–4.5 kW.
Is it better to oversize or undersize a sauna heater?
Mildly oversize, within the manufacturer's stated volume range. An undersized heater runs flat out, heats slowly, struggles in winter and wears fast; a heater one step larger cruises at lower stress and recovers quickly after water is thrown. What you should not do is oversize beyond the maker's range for the room — the stones and thermostat are matched to a volume band, and a huge heater in a tiny cabin gives harsh, fast heat rather than a better sauna.
What electrical supply does each heater size need?
As a guide at UK 230V single-phase: a 4.5 kW heater draws around 20 amps, 6 kW around 26 amps, 8 kW around 35 amps and 9 kW around 39 amps — every one of them a dedicated circuit, not a plug. Above roughly 9 kW, heaters are commonly three-phase, which most UK homes don't have. If your sizing calculation says more than 9 kW, that's usually a prompt to improve insulation rather than to chase a supply upgrade.
How do I calculate my sauna's volume?
Length × width × height, in metres. A 2m × 2m × 2.1m cabin is 8.4 cubic metres. Use the internal dimensions, and if the ceiling is over about 2.1m, note that extra height is expensive — heat stratifies above head level, so a lower ceiling both improves the sauna and shrinks the heater it needs.
Do barrel saunas need a bigger heater?
Relative to their volume, yes. A barrel has no insulated cavity — heat retention depends entirely on stave thickness — so treat a barrel as one insulation class worse than a framed cabin: pick from the upper half of the manufacturer's volume range, especially for year-round UK use. The curve does help a little (less dead air above head height), but thin walls dominate in a British winter.
