What drives a sauna quote
- Type — infrared cabins are the cheapest way in and usually run from a 13A socket; traditional cabins cost more and generally need a dedicated circuit.
- Size — every extra person means more cabin volume, a bigger heater and a higher running cost. Oversizing is the most expensive common mistake.
- Indoor or garden — a garden cabin adds a base, a weatherproof shell, insulation for UK winters and an outdoor electrical run.
- Access — a 2.4 m cabin does not go through a 900 mm side gate. Craning over the house is a real line item.
- Specification — glass fronts, thermowood or cedar cladding, bespoke benching and wood-fired heaters all move the number.

How much does a home sauna cost in the UK?
An infrared cabin is typically £1,500–£5,000, an indoor traditional cabin kit £2,500–£7,000, an outdoor barrel sauna £4,000–£9,000 and an insulated outdoor cabin £7,000–£20,000. Bespoke, architect-designed builds start around £20,000. Base preparation, the electrical supply and delivery are usually extra.
How much does a sauna cost to run?
A 6 kW traditional sauna drawing full power for a 30-minute warm-up and cycling at roughly a third of that through a 30-minute session uses about 4 kWh — a little over £1 per session at a typical UK unit rate. Infrared cabins run lower because they operate at a much lower temperature.
Does a home sauna need a special electrical supply?
Infrared cabins and small traditional heaters up to about 3 kW generally run from a standard 13A socket. Anything larger — 4.5 kW, 6 kW, 8 kW, 9 kW — needs a dedicated wired circuit sized by an electrician. Any new circuit is notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations and should come with a certificate.
