Home steam room cost UK: installation and running (2026)
“Steam room” covers two projects with nothing in common but the vapour: a modular cabin you buy and plumb in, and a custom tiled room you build. One costs like a good shower enclosure; the other costs like a small wet-room extension. Almost every confusing quote traces back to mixing them up.
We sell neither — here’s the honest breakdown of both.
Route 1: the modular steam cabin — £1,500–£4,000
A factory-sealed enclosure — glass, acrylic or composite — with the steam generator, controls and lighting built in. You need a water feed, a drain and an electrical supply.
- Unit: £1,500–£4,000 for decent domestic quality (flimsier ones exist and feel it)
- Fitting: plumber + electrician, typically £300–£800 all-in for a straightforward site
- Strengths: sealed by design, no risk to the building fabric, working in a day
- Limits: shower-cubicle proportions and looks — this is a steam shower, not a spa room
For one or two people who want humid heat indoors, this is the value option, and it’s the one to compare directly against an infrared cabin at similar money.
Route 2: the custom tiled steam room — £7,000–£20,000+
A purpose-built saturated wet room. Where the money goes:
| Element | Typical cost | Why it’s non-negotiable |
|---|---|---|
| Steam generator (3–9 kW domestic) | £900–£2,500 | sized to room volume, like a sauna heater |
| Tanking / waterproofing | £1,000–£3,000 | steam finds any gap; failures rot the structure invisibly |
| Tiling + bench build | £2,000–£6,000+ | every surface, on a waterproof substrate |
| Sloped ceiling + sealed door | within build | condensation must run down walls, not drip on heads |
| Ventilation + IP-rated lighting | £500–£1,500 | the room must dry fully between uses |
| Plumbing + electrics | £500–£1,500 | notifiable electrical work, as with a sauna |
The generator is the smallest line. What you’re really paying for is containment — a permanently wet room that never lets moisture into the building. That’s also the honest reason to use a wet-room-experienced installer rather than a general tiler, and why quotes vary so widely for the “same” room.
Running costs — cheaper than people fear
Domestic generators run 3–9 kW, sessions are short, and warm-up is 15–30 minutes: call it £1–£2 per session at 2026 electricity prices — the same order as a sauna (the sauna numbers transfer almost directly). The real ongoing costs are maintenance: generator descaling (hard-water areas especially — a scale filter is cheap insurance), grout and seal upkeep, and running the extraction after every session.
Steam vs sauna, decided by build reality
Same money buys: a custom steam room, or a quality outdoor sauna fully installed with change. Steam wins on humid-heat feel and indoor spa ambience; sauna wins on temperature range, simplicity, garden siting and long-term robustness. The experience-and-health comparison is in sauna vs steam room — and if the plan was always “both, one day,” the combined build maths lives in home wellness setup cost.

Common questions
How much does a home steam room cost in the UK?
Two very different projects share the name. A modular steam shower cabin — a sealed factory unit with a built-in generator — typically runs £1,500–£4,000 plus straightforward fitting. A custom-built tiled steam room is a wet-room construction project: realistically £7,000–£20,000+ including the generator, tanking, tiling, a sloped ceiling and ventilation. The generator itself is £900–£2,500 of that.
Is a steam room cheaper to run than a sauna?
Broadly comparable per session, for opposite reasons. A steam generator is usually smaller in kW than a sauna heater (3–9 kW for domestic rooms) and sessions are shorter, but it runs near-continuously while in use and the room takes 15–30 minutes to reach temperature. Expect roughly £1–£2 per session at 2026 electricity prices — running cost is not the deciding factor between them; build cost and maintenance are.
Why are custom steam rooms so much more expensive than saunas?
Because steam is harder to contain than dry heat. A steam room is effectively a permanently saturated wet room: it needs full tanking (waterproofing) behind the tiles, a vapour-sealed door, a ceiling sloped so condensation runs down the walls rather than dripping, and mechanical ventilation to dry the room afterwards. Skimp on any of those and the moisture finds the building fabric — which is why the labour and materials outweigh the generator several times over.
Can I convert an existing shower or bathroom into a steam room?
Sometimes — a well-sealed shower enclosure can take a small generator to become a steam shower, which is the budget route. A full bathroom conversion is rarely worth it: the whole room would need tanking, a sloped ceiling and sealed lighting, at which point a purpose-built enclosure inside the room, or a modular cabin, is usually cheaper and dramatically less risky for the building.
Steam room or sauna — which should I choose?
Sauna if you want higher temperatures, dry heat, a garden building and lower build complexity; steam if you specifically want humid heat and a spa-shower feel indoors. For most UK homes a sauna is the simpler, cheaper and more durable install, which is why it's usually the default — but the honest comparison of heat, feel and health claims is its own question, covered in our sauna vs steam room guide.

How much does a home sauna cost in the UK?
A home sauna costs £1,500–£5,000 for infrared, £4,000–£9,000 for a barrel and £7,000–£20,000 for an insulated cabin — before base, electrics and delivery.
How much does a home sauna cost to run in the UK?
A home sauna session costs roughly 60p to £3 in electricity, depending on heater size and insulation. The arithmetic, plus monthly costs at 2–4 sessions a week.

Infrared sauna: how it works and what it costs
An infrared sauna warms the body directly with radiant heat rather than heating the air, so it runs at 45–60°C. How it works, what it costs, who it suits.
