How much does a home sauna cost in the UK?
A home sauna in the UK costs roughly £1,500–£5,000 for an infrared cabin, £2,500–£7,000 for an indoor traditional kit, £4,000–£9,000 for an outdoor barrel, £7,000–£20,000 for an insulated outdoor cabin and £20,000–£60,000 or more for a bespoke build. Those figures are for the sauna itself. On an outdoor installation you should expect a further £1,500–£6,000 for the base, electrical supply, delivery and assembly.

Two things to notice. First, the bands overlap heavily — a very good barrel beats a poor cabin. Second, the further down the table you go, the more of the total is labour and coordination rather than materials.

The costs people forget
This is where a £7,000 cabin becomes an £11,000 project. None of these are optional extras invented by installers; they are what it takes to make a sauna work.

The two that surprise people most are the electrical supply and access. A sauna at the end of a 30 m garden, with the cable crossing a block-paved drive, can cost more to connect than the heater cost to buy. And if the cabin will not come through the side gate, a hiab lift is a four-figure line item that nobody mentioned at the point of sale. What actually drives the price
Insulation and construction. The single biggest divider in outdoor saunas. A barrel is usually solid timber staves with no insulation layer; an insulated cabin has a framed wall with mineral wool, a foil vapour barrier, a ventilated cavity and cladding. That construction costs more up front and costs less to run every session for the next fifteen years, which matters in a UK winter. See sauna running costs for the arithmetic.
Size. Not linearly. Going from a 2-person to a 4-person cabin adds materials, but it also pushes you into a bigger heater, a heavier base and often a bigger electrical circuit. See sauna sizes and occupancy.
Timber. Nordic spruce is the volume material. Thermowood, western red cedar, alder and aspen each add cost — cedar and aspen benches on a mid-size cabin can be a four-figure difference on their own.
Glass. Toughened glass for a sauna is specialist, and large panes need structural framing and careful handling. A panoramic front is often the largest single upgrade on an outdoor cabin.
Heater. The spread between a functional 6 kW element heater and a premium or wood-fired unit is easily £1,500. Wood-fired also brings a flue, a hearth and combustion-appliance requirements.
Roof, finish and location. EPDM or shingle roofing, guttering, a covered porch and external staining are all real costs on an outdoor building — and labour rates in London and the South East run materially above the rest of the UK, with surcharges on remote deliveries.
What a suspiciously cheap quote is leaving out
A £3,000 “outdoor sauna” is not necessarily a scam. It is usually a shell price. The things that are missing, in rough order of how often they are missing:
- The base. You are quoted for a building, not for anything to stand it on.
- The electrics. A dedicated circuit and its certification is not in the box.
- Delivery to position. Kerbside means a pallet on the pavement and your problem after that.
- Assembly. “Easy self-build” cabins routinely take two people two to four days.
- Insulation. Or a nominal 25 mm where 50–100 mm is appropriate for UK year-round use.
- The vapour barrier. Omitting the foil barrier, or substituting polythene, is the single most common defect in cheap and DIY builds, and it rots the wall from the inside.
- Heater capacity. A 4.5 kW heater in a cabin that needs 8 kW never gets properly hot.
- VAT. A trade or import listing quoted ex-VAT looks a fifth cheaper than it is.
- Warranty and support. A drop-shipped cabin with no UK entity behind it has no meaningful warranty.
None of that makes the cheap option wrong. If you already have a slab, an electrician in the family and a free weekend, a shell price is genuinely a shell price. It only becomes a problem when it is compared against an installed quote as if the two are the same thing.
How to compare three quotes like for like
Ask every supplier to price the same specification, and to itemise it. A one-page comparison beats an hour of phone calls.
- Cabin footprint and internal height, and how many people each bench level seats.
- Wall construction: insulation type and thickness, vapour barrier material, cavity, cladding species and thickness.
- Heater: make, model, kW rating, and how many kilograms of stone are included.
- Glass: door only or door plus panels; total glazed area.
- Base: included or excluded, and to what specification.
- Electrical: is the dedicated circuit, isolator and Part P certification in the price, or is it “customer to arrange”? See home sauna electrical requirements.
- Ventilation: are inlet and outlet vents specified and positioned, or left to chance?
- Delivery and assembly: kerbside or to position, hiab included or provisional, days and crew.
- Warranty, VAT and payment terms: length and scope, inclusive or exclusive, deposit and stage payments.

Running costs, briefly
The purchase price gets the attention; the running cost decides whether you use it. A 6 kW heater consumes roughly 6 kWh in the heat-up hour and around 3 kWh in a second hour of cycling — about 9 kWh per two-hour session. At typical 2026 UK domestic rates that is £2.00–£2.50 a session, or roughly £200–£260 a year at twice a week. Add a modest allowance for maintenance: external staining every two to three years, bench cleaning, and stone replacement every few years as they crack.
So is it worth it?
That depends entirely on how often you will use it, which turns far more on siting and convenience than on specification. A £5,000 barrel ten metres from the back door beats a £15,000 cabin at the end of the garden if the £15,000 one requires a decision every time.

Check whether the quote includes the base, the electrical supply and Part P certification, delivery to position rather than kerbside, assembly labour, the heater and stones, and VAT. A cabin-only price against a fully installed price can differ by £3,000–£5,000 while describing the same building.
How much does it cost to run a home sauna?
A 6 kW heater drawing roughly 9 kWh over a two-hour session — one hour heating, one hour cycling — costs about £2.00–£2.50 at typical 2026 UK domestic electricity rates. Twice a week is roughly £200–£260 a year. Infrared cabins draw less per session but heat a smaller volume to a lower temperature, so the comparison is not like for like.
Is a cheap sauna from a marketplace listing worth it?
Sometimes, if you know what is missing. Very low prices usually mean thin or absent insulation, an untreated softwood shell, a budget heater, kerbside-only delivery, no base and no electrical work. None of that is fraud — it is a shell price. The problem is comparing it against an installed price as though they are the same product.
Do I pay VAT on a home sauna?
Yes. A domestic sauna is standard-rated at 20% in the UK. Many trade and import suppliers quote ex-VAT, which makes a listing look around a fifth cheaper than a retail quote for the same cabin, so always confirm which you are looking at. The reduced rate for energy-saving materials does not apply to saunas.
